Spine Road Opening, Whitfield :: Latest News

29th June 2011

Whitfield Spine Road was opened on Friday 17th June by Lord Provost, John Letford.

The Spine Road designed to assist access to the New Primary School and future developments within the area consisted of 1200 metres of link road joining Summerfield Avenue and Lothian Crescent.

Kilmac proposed an alternative earthmoving model using the surplus 10,000m3 and subsoil generated on site to remediate the existing site at St Saviours, whilst reusing the suitable crushed demolition at St Saviours to subsidise capping and drainage reinstatement materials at Whitfield.

The aforementioned resulted in a cost saving to the project of approx £250,000.00. The 20,000m3 earthworks were phased to minimise disruption to local access routes.

The works were carried out under an NEC partnership with Dundee City Council and Tayside Contracts, with all parties working together to maximise efficiencies and valued engineering.

Construction Director, Richard Kilcullen stated that the most significant hurdles to overcome during the project were “the phasing and programming of the Utility Works, exacerbated by previous unknown routes that had to be incorporated into the works programme”.

The great working relationship between the Council, Tayside Contracts and Kilmac, together with excellent project communication channels allowed this to be undertaken with the minimum of disruption.

In addition, lessons learned on this project are being carried forward into the Dykes of Gray £2.5m road upgrade at the West End of Dundee, currently ahead of programme.
